Nikola Tesla was an eminent physicist who specialised in electricity, living in North America. Robert Angier had heard great things about Tesla, and visited him at his home. Tesla's servant, Mr Alley, showed Angier in before he asked Tesla to build him a machine that could transport a human being. Tesla showed him the power of electricity, how he could light up a field of lightbulbs without wires.
Tesla built the machine, but it could not make Angier's hat disappear. However on his way out, Angier noticed that all the hats were being duplicated several yards away. Tesla's machine could make copies of objects, animals and people, and Angier bought it from him for a large sum of money for use in his magic show.
