James Gordon Jr. was the son of James and Barbara Gordon. After an attempted assassination of Gotham City's mayor, detective Gerard Stephens informed James's mother that his father had been killed in the line of duty by the Joker. James watched as his mother screamed at Batman that it was his fault.
However, it later transpired that James junior's father was not dead, and he came back to the Gordon household as the young boy slept. James asked if Batman had saved his father, to which his dad replied that this time he had saved Batman. He was quickly called away, and later Harvey Dent turned up at their home and kidnapped the family. He took them to 250 52nd Street, where he threatened to kill James Jr. as payment for the death of Rachel Dawes. However, Batman arrived and saved his life, and then fled the scene. James asked his father why Batman was running despite doing nothing wrong, to which James Sr. replied it was what was required of Batman.
