James Gordon was a Gotham City police officer, who later became Lieutenant and Commissioner.

Batman Begins

Gordon was a Sergeant in the GCPD when Joe Chill murdered the millionaire Thomas Wayne and his wife. Gordon comforted their orphaned son Bruce after the incident. Years later, Bruce visited Gordon in his office, telling him that together they could clean up the city. Gordon was unconvinced, and after his corrupt partner Arnold Flass was involved in drug smuggling, Bruce Wayne delivered the mob boss Carmine Falcone to the police along with evidence.

Batman then trailed the drug smuggling to Jonathan Crane at Arkham Asylum, and Gordon went in to help him. Gordon escaped with Rachel Dawes, and delivered her to Batman. Later, when Ra's al Ghul threatened the city, Gordon drove The Tumbler to destroy a sectin of monorail and stop the microwave emitter from reaching the water board. However, Batman's actions inspired the criminals of Gotham to become more theatrical, and Gordon informed Batman of the Joker.

The Dark Knight

In the Major Crimes Unit, Gordon worked with Harvey Dent to bring down mob boss Sal Maroni. Using Mr Lau, they tied up the mob in a reco case and arrested many of them. However, the Joker began threatening people if Batman didn't reveal himself. Gordon faked his own death at the attempted assassination of Mayor Anthony Garcia, then disguised himself as a van driver to drive Harvey Dent to safety. When the Joker attacked his convoy, Gordon caught him and arrested him. He was then promoted to Police Commissioner after the death of Gillian Loeb.

However, the Joker had kidnapped Dent and Rachel Dawes. Gordon tried to save Rachel but she was killed, so Gordon went to the hospital to console Dent. Gordon then had to protect Coleman Reese as the Joker put out a hit on him, but he was saved by Bruce Wayne. The Joker then held some doctors hostage, and Gordon had to deal with the situation. Batman went in alone, as Gordon received a call from Dent telling him that his family had been taken hostage. Gordon rushed to the warehouse to see Dent threatening his children, flipping a coin to decide whether they lived. Batman saved his son in the nick of time, killing Dent. Batman then persuaded Gordon to portray Batman as the villain and not tell anyone that Dent had gone insane. Gordon called it in as Batman drove away.
